Campaign Launch

The starting point for this initiative was to argue that the advancement of American democracy is contingent upon having an engaged and active citizenry. The intent was to evaluate the impact the poor and underrepresented could have if they were equipped and willing to exercise their civic duty.  As an example, the progress made during the civil rights era was due to citizens exercising their civic duty to advocate for equality. By exerting this civic duty on multiple fronts, the Civil Rights Movement demonstrated the power of organized, unremitting citizen action.

Yet, after seeking counsel on how to make this argument, it became apparent that the notion of citizens holding a civic duty is open to debate and even if citizens actually hold a civic duty, they must first be educated on how to exercise that duty. Enlightening undereducated citizens is necessary for the mass civic action necessary to effect change in American democracy; until the minority is equipped to exert its influence against the majority, inequality and injustice will persist.

Herein lies the mission of The Campaign. The Campaign aims to inspire civic participation and illustrate the various ways citizens can and do use social media to be informed, express opinions, and take action, while also examining how a social media “talking head” can reach and influence citizens.

Effective participation by members of all racial and ethnic groups in the civic life of our Nation is essential if the dream of one Nation, indivisible, is to be reached. - Supreme Court majority opinion in Grutter v. Bollinger, 2003

Campaign Brief

OBSERVATION*: Twitter has been a revolutionary idea but it has not been a conductor of revolutionary ideas. Inquiry: Will it ever? Should it?

*Communicated via @lavvocato’s Twitter account

REPLY: With such an abundance of ideas shared via Twitter it is difficult to say whether any of these ideas are indeed revolutionary. Yet, new media as a whole has become a central component of socio-political efforts to engage, educate, and propel citizens into action.

Although the framers of the Constitution may not have envisioned mass citizen action, it is without question that with the granting of rights came mechanisms for citizens, individually and collectively, to maintain those rights. Assuming that consistent mass civic action in America is a revolutionary idea, new media can prove itself as a viable conductor of revolutionary ideas by serving as a mechanism to increase civic action in both election and non-election years.

PREMISE: The Campaign aims to inspire civic participation and illustrate the various ways citizens can and do use social media to be informed, express opinions and take action. This goal will be reached by creating literary, photographic and video content based on social, economic and political themes packaged in a format that is entertaining, inspirational and insightful.

TARGET AUDIENCE, The Thriving Millennials (18-35): The Thriving Millennials represent the most imaginative and capable group in America. Further, they have a lifting as they climb mentality: as they thrive, they extend their resources to help others thrive. They employ technological savvy to curate ideas, exhibit those ideas, and put those ideas into action. The Thriving Millennials are positioned to progress American society and reduce the economic, political, and judicial inequity that currently exists; thus, they are well-suited advocates for marginalized citizens.

The Thriving Millennials will lead the next 50 years with the Internet as a valuable tool, if not the most valuable tool. Because of our interconnectivity: people across the globe are gaining a greater appreciation of foreign cultures; atrocities that once went largely unknown are now being brought to fore quickly and quelled; and the notion of becoming one world is actualizing.

PLATFORM: The Mortgage and Banking Crises proved that the top 10% of American’s having free reign over the economy is not an effective way to move the country forward. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars have shown the limitations of our military force. Our wealth and military capacity in combination are great enough to keep us amongst the global elite, yet to maintain our position as a global leader we need more. America’s position as a global leader is predicated on the progression of its citizenry.

  1. Objective: Build Cathedrals of Learning

    1. Focus: Highlighting the fact that failure to provide a world class education for all American citizens is an anchor on American progression.

    2. Basis: The value of manual labor during the industrial era overshadowed the value of advanced education. Now the definition of skilled labor has evolved from being based on physical capability to intellectual capacity. Brains, more so than brawn, will be the key to global leadership.

  2. Objective: Make it in America

    1. Focus: Cultivating resources for entrepreneurship and local business development.

    2. Basis: Restoring the American workforce requires investing in young American creators. The creation of small businesses contributes substantially to the American economy; yet the process of acquiring capital, private or public, keeps many capable participants out of the game. What young entrepreneurs lack in business experience and record of accomplishment they make up for in creativity and fearlessness in the face of likely failure, both key characteristics to entrepreneurial success.

  3. Objective: Feed Starving Artists

    1. Focus: Promoting the increase in arts education nationwide and investment in artist development.

    2. Basis: The works of American artists serve as ambassadors of American culture around the world. However, digital distribution has lead to a culture of consumers expecting art to be free. This has already had a detrimental affect on the music industry and it is inevitable that the motion picture and publishing industries will suffer a similar fate if piracy protection does not advance at a more rapid pace. Never before has the need for art patronage been greater.

Fall of The Republic: Question Yourself
What is your unfair advantage? What is the thing you do so well, with such grace and endurance that it separates you from the pack? What can you do with such consistent efficacy that success is assumed and inevitable?
Let us pretend we do not know what our unfair advantage is. Let us humble ourselves to the thought that we have no clue what makes us special. Let us assume we are not and have never been at our best or our worst.
What would you pick as your unfair advantage? What ingredient would perfect your recipe for excellence? What would happen if you one day realize the answer? Would you run with it or run away from it?

Fall of The Republic: Off and On
As we near that time where we declare next year ours, keep in mind the things we walked away from this year and in years past.
We have escaped the dooms of disaster and the flames of defeat. Yet, we have also abandoned causes and concerns that for a moment had us fired up and ready to go. We shared our testimony and claimed our reward but we stood reluctant to raise hell to find heaven or at least a haven.
As new years near, never forget the things we swear by and swore off. Remember the legacy we promised to carry on and the heritage we vowed to preserve. When we tag ourselves winners winning, forget not the lost and the losses. When the clock strikes twelve and the new day begins, inscribe upon the clean slate those dedications unveiled and unfinished.

“The Woman From Bushburg” (A Portrait) #SummerShortSet #Givenchy

@lavvocato:

Summer Short Set, a branded entertainment series

Episode 6: The Woman From Bushburg, a collaboration between Jon Genius and DP featuring Givenchy

Yet another glorious summer has come and gone. Before the Fall of The Republic we felt obligated to publish the September Additions of the Summer Short Set Series. First up, in celebration of New York Fashion Week, we present The Woman From Bushburg. Bushburg, a.k.a. William Wick, is the sweet spot of Brooklyn, New York, where its Williamsburg and Bushwick neighborhoods intersect.

The Woman From Bushburg is a black angel who glides down Knickerbocker Avenue on her Lamborghini Cruiser. Her humility refines her movement. Her modesty ignites her allure. On the final day of summer, on her final fantastic voyage, The Woman From Bushburg was a portrait of heavenly grace.

The brand, Givenchy, was brushed upon The Woman From Bushburg drawing from Creative Director Riccardo Tisci’s pattern of sprinkling touches of colored models into his runway shows. Tisci deepened Givenchy’s brand complexion by hand crafting the art direction of “Watch theThrone”, an audio-visual work created by Kanye West and Jay-Z. “Watch The Throne”, a celebration of black excellence where Jay-Z wonders “…why all the pretty icons always all-white?” harkens back to Angelitos Negros where Roberta Flack asked, “Painters, why do you always paint white virgins?” and requested that they also “paint beautiful black angels.”

How can we have a heaven without black angels. And sepia angels. And peach angels. How can we have beauty without apricot models. And mahogany models. And burnt sienna models. In the colorless territories of the fashion world, designers’ devotion to pale, thin hues has placed beauty on a diet. Beauty, at its fullest, is the dynamic and vibrant juxtaposed with the static and subdued. Without darkness and thickness, beauty is only a shadow of its true self.

Tisci’s Givenchy is painting black angels, and brown angels, and yellow angels beside white virgins, and blond angels and brunette angels.

Let the heavens rejoice!

“Nice to meet you. Where do I know you from? Pardon if I stare, but I’m trying to clarify whether I know you in real life. Your face looks familiar. Ah well. Let’s hug it out!”
Who we are has become who we present ourselves to be. I am who I tell you I am. I have the profile to prove it. Until you prove otherwise. You can trust me though, I’m verified.
